Trail Marker #30 Aligning New Year Goals with Your Values and God's Word: A Blueprint for Success

As we embark on a new year, the tradition of setting resolutions or goals is common. However, for lasting and meaningful change, it's crucial that our goals align with our values and the timeless wisdom found in God's word. This podcast will explore the importance of setting goals that line up with your core values and explore practical steps to break down these goals into actionable steps.

Every day, you make decisions based on your values. They influence your behaviors and understanding of right and wrong. Your values are a compass that guides your decisions and actions. When setting new year goals, it's essential to align your goals with your values where you have harmony to have a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Our past experiences, family, religion and much more shape our beliefs and values.

Here are some examples of core values:

  • Authenticity

  • Creativity

  • Kindness

  • Financial Security

  • Compassion

  • Health/Fitness

  • Nature

  • Accomplishment

  • Creativity

  • Dependability

  • Loyalty

  • Beauty

  • Bravery

  • Gratitude

  • Love

  • Learning

  • Leadership

  • Security

  • Adventure

  • Freedom

  • Curiosity

  • Family

  • Work

  • Success

Values are just one part that we need to consider when setting goals for the new year. Integrate God's word into this process will add a profound dimension to your dreams. The Bible provides examples that can guide and inspire you to pursue goals that honor God and benefit others. Whether it's wisdom from Proverbs, guidance from the teachings of Jesus, or encouragement from the disciples, scripture can provide a solid foundation for setting goals that are in line with God's purpose for your life. I recommend that we pray to ask for discernment as to what goals God wants us to pursue.

Once you have identified goals that are aligned with your values and you know that they line up with God’s word, then the next step is to break them down into actionable steps. This process not only makes your goals more achievable but also provides a roadmap for your journey throughout the year.

  1. Define Clear Objectives: Clearly articulate the specific objectives you want to achieve. Ensure that these objectives are measurable and realistic.

  2. Create a Timeline: Establish a timeline for achieving your goals. Break down the timeline into smaller intervals, such as monthly or quarterly checkpoints, to track your progress.

  3. Identify Action Steps: Outline the specific actions you need to take to reach each objective. These actions should be realistic, attainable, and directly contribute to your overall goal.

  4. Seek Accountability: Share your goals with a trusted friend, family member, or mentor who can provide support and hold you accountable. Regular check-ins can help you stay on track and provide encouragement during challenging times.

As you set out to pursue your new year goals, remember you deserve to live the life you would love. Paul reminds us that we need to look towards the future. “Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.” (Philippians 3:13-15)

This next year is time for transformation, growing closer to God, financially secure, and deeper relationships. Jeremiah 29:11-13 shares God’s promise, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”
