Confront Fear with Faith: Turning Our Thoughts To God (Trail Marker 53)

We have been looking at the seven self-destructive habits that are common as Christians. This week we will focus on fear. Fear can be a powerful emotion that can distance us from the peace and purpose God intends for us. As a life coach guiding women through healing from trauma, I have witnessed how fear can distort our perception of ourselves and the world around us. It’s important to confront fear with faith, recognizing its impact and embracing the strength God provides.

Fear Disregards God’s Peace

Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."  Fear often disregards this divine peace, causing us to focus on our anxieties instead of God's calming presence. When fear begins to creep in, take it to the Lord in prayer. Lay your fears at HIs feet and allow His peace to fill your heart.

Fear Distorts Us, But Our Identity Has Not Changed

In the midst of fear, it's easy to lose sight of who we are in Christ. We are not defined by our trauma or our past mistakes. Instead we are defined by God’s love and His purpose for us. Romans 8:37 reminds us, "In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us."

Fear Discourages - It Is Contagious

Fear can spread rapidly, affecting not only our own lives but also the lives of those around us. It can discourage us and lead us to make choices that are not aligned with God's will. Deuteronomy 31:8 encourages us to confront fear. "The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." As we confront our fears with courage, we are setting an example for others to follow.

Fear Forgets His Promises - He Deserves Our Trust

When we allow fear to take hold, we often forget the promises God has made to us. Fear blinds us to His faithfulness and love. Yet, God is always true to His word. By remembering His promises and trusting in His unfailing love, we can combat the fear that seeks to undermine our faith.

Fear Destroys God’s Principles

Fear leads us away from living according to God’s principles, causing us to act in ways that are contrary to His teachings. This is a form of disobedience, which inevitably brings consequences. We must remember that God’s ways are designed for our well-being and growth. Courageously living out His principles, even in the face of fear, honors Him and leads to a more fulfilling life. Second Corinthians 4:8-9 reassures us, "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed." Through following God’s principles we become resilient and upheld by His strength.

Fear Is Disobedience - There Are Always Consequences

Choosing to live in fear is a form of disobedience to God. It’s a decision to trust our anxieties over His assurances. This disobedience can have ripple effects, leading to a generational curse where fear and its consequences are passed down. However, by confronting our fear and choosing faith, we can break this cycle and pave a new path of courage and trust for future generations.

Steps to Overcome Fear:

1. Confront Your Fear Honestly

Acknowledge the presence of fear in your life. Understand its sources and the ways it affects you. Honest confrontation is the first step to overcoming fear.

2. Confess Your Fear

Confess your fear to God. It is a choice to face it rather than hide from it. By bringing your fears into the light, you can begin to dismantle their power over you.

3. Claim God’s Promises

Hold tightly to the promises God has made. Be of good courage, knowing that He is with you. "Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear," as Mark Twain said. Embrace this truth in your spiritual journey.

4. Cultivate a Relationship with God

Spend time in prayer, worship, and reading the Bible. Strengthening your relationship with God will fortify you against the grip of fear. Trust in His presence and guidance in your life.

Remember that experiencing fear and trauma does not mean you are crazy. It means you are human. You are broken, but beautifully and wonderfully made by a God who loves you beyond measure. Psalm 34:18 assures us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in Spirit.” God sees your pain and understands your fears. He is with you always to offer you His healing and hope.

In moments of fear, remember to turn your thoughts to God. Let His truth be the anchor for your soul. His love will drive out fear and His peace will fill your heart. You are pressed, but not overcome. With God you have the strength to face your fears and walk in victory.
