Trail Marker #10 - Turning Panic Into A State Of Being Calm

As we stop at this trail marker, let's talk about how we let panic control our lives. The feelings of panic or anxiety are not wrong. It is another feeling that is normal to have in life. What we do with those feelings though can often lead us to make decisions that are not helpful for our lives.

There are ways that we can process anxious thoughts to transition from being in a state of panic to a state of being calm. I came across an acronym using the word CALM that I believe will be helpful to you.

The first thing that you can do with any feelings that you have with panic or fear is to CONFESS THE WORD OF GOD. Our thoughts often will focus on the negative, worry, and hopelessness. I encourage you to take a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle of the page from top to bottom. On the left hand side, write down the feelings that you are having. On the right hand side write down the truths of scripture. Neil Anderson, author of "Victory over Darkness," created a list of scriptures reminding us of who we are (https://www.ficm.org/about-us/who-i-am-in-christ/) For example if you are feeling insignificant, you can rest on the truth of scripture of Ephesians 2:10, "I am God's workmanship."

The A in CALM reminds us to ACCEPT THE SITUATION. We can not control our circumstances. We know that trials are going to come. Here on earth, because of sin, there is grief, betrayal, hurt. God did not design this but He does walk with you through it. Rather than being in denial of the hurt, accepting the circumstances will grow your strength. The buffalo are known to accept the storms of life. When they see a storm coming they face it head on. Yes there will be some hard times but the storm passes over them. Cows are known to run away from storms. The storms continue to move and often the cows will run to the point of exhaustion to the point of death. They do not accept that storms are going to come. Face the storm and be the buffalo.

L stands for LET GO. This is easier said than done. Having control of my circumstances is what I long for. My thought is that I will be able to stop the hurt, make great decisions, and of course that is the last thing that happens. I can't control my situation any more than you can. By letting go of the outcomes provides peace knowing that God, who is stronger, has our best for us. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that "He has a plan and a purpose for your life, a hope and a future." Even in the face of forgiveness of those who have hurt you letting go stops the venom from eating away at our souls.

The M in CALM stands for MOMENT. You were designed to live the life you deserve. Being in a state of panic has you focusing on the past or present circumstances. Instead I encourage you to focus on the moments to come. The hard times will happen but they are not your entire story. Standing on the truth of scripture can help you think of the joy you have in your life. in Philippians 4:13, Paul reminds us "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me." What things do you want to do? Be specific on what that looks like. If you are often full of anxiety over your health, then write down what your health is going to be like stepping forward into the future. I would love to help you create action steps that you can take to move forward in your life. Take time to schedule a one-on-one discovery call to learn more about how having a life coach will help you move from panic to peace.
